H.264 (or MPEG-4 Part 10) is the preferred standard when it comes to broadcast video encoding. Its strength lies in its ability to offer superb video quality at relatively small bitrates.

Utilizing H.264 encoding allows the operator to achieve higher quality than was previously possible all while saving on bandwidth and storage costs. Not surprisingly H.264 is currently being used by most broadcasters, streaming service providers such as Netflix, YouTube, Facebook, and it is the encoding standard used in Blu-ray Discs.

In recent years H.264 has been a popular choice for internet and cloud based video streaming applications, together with HLS and RTMP media delivery protocols.
